A short walk from the Winter Palace, the last home of the Russian Tsars and now the State Hermitage Museum, W St Petersburg is a perfect base for exploring the wonderful architecture of the city.
W Hotels’ first foray into Russia, it is one of very few super-modern hotels in St Petersburg and by far the hippest. The hotel is housed in a 19th-century building, but the interior is decidedly up to date, with disco-ball lamps in the bedrooms inspired by Fabergé eggs.
There are 137 rooms, 10 of which are suites, a number with stunning views of St Isaac’s cathedral, the biggest church in the city, which took 40 years to build. The ground-floor restaurant by Alain Ducasse produces haute cuisine with locally sourced ingredients, now a growing trend in Russia. A rooftop cocktail terrace with perhaps the best views in the city is open from May to September, as summer sets in and the period known as the White Nights begins.
There is a modern gym and a spa with six treatment rooms, a nail lounge, a sauna and a pool. The ground-floor bar has already become a trendy place for young professionals to gather. Part of the appeal of the hotel, in a city where service remains on the frosty side, is the ‘Whatever/Whenever’ mentality instilled in the staff, who are always enthusiastic and ready to help guests; there is even a pet service with beds and toys provided for visiting family friends.
